Two days.
It had been two days since the crash and Mira could barely stand to wait much longer to get outside, if only to shut up her squad's complaints about a lack of action. Two days was entirely too long for her men, apparently, though she couldn't blame them. They'd all spent eighteen years stuffed inside freezers, being subjected to the most thorough information downloading of combat based knowledge created by man, and now that they were out, they were just sitting about, waiting for orders to go outside and recon the area. Though most of them knew full well that the captain needed to ready things inside the ship first before beginning exterior operations, it was still an ingrained desire to go and get their boots on the ground.
One can only shoot targets so many times in forty eight hours without getting bored, after all.
Luckily, however, it looked like things would liven up soon. The vessel's sensors hadn't detected anything on the outside that posed any danger to the vessel at first glance, and the captain had informed his officers that outside operations would commence shortly. Mira was excited about this, to say the least. Not only would her fellow troopes quit their moaning, but she'd finally be able to spread her legs and get moving. Rock walls and indoor tracks are fun and all, but nothing, she assumed, would beat the real thing. At least, she hoped so. Going outside and realizing she hated it would absolutely suck with her position.
She was in her quarters thinking about this when Mira's communicator started buzzing. It had been going off frequently over the pass two days, so it wasn't much of a surprise. A large number of unit NCOs had remained asleep, and so men and women with her qualifications were in short supply. The captain had her going back and forth assisting wherever he needed her the most, where he needed her often times being by his side, where she could relay instructions from the captain to her superiors. Meanwhile, the Head of Internal Affairs, a woman Mira had met right after awakening, had been utilizing Mira's service as well to offset the lack of Internal Affairs agents runnning around. So yeah, the buzzing communicator was nothing new.
What was new was the voice on the end when she picked up. Mira was familiar with it, of course, having ran into the owner several times after it was recovered, but she had yet to be called by Lieutenant KRIEOS before. So when she answered the communicator to hear his voice, she was taken by surprise.
"Know what day it is, corporal?"
"No, no sir," she said, curious.
"Exit day, corporal! Cap'n wants some boots on the ground outside to do some good old fashioned surveying of the area. Scanners say there isn't anything out there that's hostile, but he wants to have his troops see it themselves. And since Sergeant Demidov is busy running errands for the cap'n again, you're on fireteam lead duty! So finish what you're doing and get down to the armory to gear up."
"Sir yes sir!" was her only response before the LT cut the line.
Jumping up from her bed, Mira slid on her boots and laced them up before sliding open her quarters door and heading for the supply depot. Lieutenant KRIEOS, though he'd only been in charge of the platoon for a day now, had already made it clear that he didn't screw around. Mira had nothing but respect for the beaten up old mech. That was for sure. If he said jump, she wouldn't ask a single question, she'd just do it.
------
Upon arriving at the supply depot, Mira found herself surrounded by a couple dozen fellow soldiers, gearing up for their assignments. She didn't waste time in joining them, heading to her assigned locker to begin suiting up in her combat gear. As she did so, Mira's face spread into a predatory grin, mirroring that of many of her fellow squadmates. Even if she didn't pull her trigger once, the scout was going to enjoy this. She was going to enjoy this a lot.
As she finished sliding her armored chestplate over her head, and hooking up the strength enhancing system, Mira glanced about to find the LT. She found him standing in the midst of the unit NCOs, giving out the orders. When he saw her, he motioned her over, and pointed towards one of the scout vehicles near the ship's exit. "Corporal Phrix, 3rd Squad's fireteams are that way. You're taking Talon since Demidov is out. Move it, corporal!"
Mira saluted, before running off towards the four-man vehicle. As she arrived, she called out to the assembling troopers. "Alright, Fireteam Talon, on me!"
