Straying away (Kabukk/Natives)

Hm... a... scent, that much was certain. Maybe slightly similar to some of those he knew, but all in all something unfamiliar. And of course, the ever so familiar adage popping into his head in the case that this might be something that he wouldn't be able to speak with: 'fight or flee'.

Well, that was that, anyway. Anyone's guess how much he kept it actively in mind, but it was still there all the same.

No matter; first things first, he obviously had to check out whatever it even was that his nose had caught the scent of. Cautiously even, perhaps; a rare time he might even bother with the sentiment, only by random chance of his mind straying a little toward it. Around... that way seemed reasonable enough. Let him keep a little low, stick to some of the more shadowy areas back into the very edge of the forest before it became the beach. His territory, in its own way, considering his black fur that had done him a fair bit of good in the past for... well, sneaking around and away from home to what was steadily becoming his new home in a small clearing a little ways off. Some food and water in the area, a potential great view... everything he needed, really.

Now this, then... a... something large. And white-furred. That was... just a little different, not that he'd room to talk himself with how completely unusual his own black fur was around his kin. Quietly and in the shadows just as before, Kai wandered still closer, until the point where he wasn't very far away at all. "You... from this area or somethin'?" he curiously inquired. It was the only reasonable explanation he could come up with at the moment, really, though there was always the possibility of somewhere across the water as well... but then would be the question of why they'd crossed it to be here and not there. Hm.

'Ivory'? That was... a term rather unfamiliar to him, and thus, there seemed little point in paying it much mind. 'Ice' at least he recognized, including from many mentioning its prevalence 'up north' or whatever precisely they'd said. That as well he'd never paid too much mind to, beyond considering it as a possibility for his eventual escape from the pack, but... ah well. At least there was one familiar term there.

"Hm... well... mostly just sand 'round here, seems like," Kai idly observed, his eyes wandering that very same spread of sand for a moment or two. "And well, lots of water... but anyway, name's Kai. I'm from off that way, but I dunno if the pack'd be too friendly to folks that ain't us, so... well... I don't really care too much anyway since they don't care much about me, so I guess it's probably fine," he concluded with a little shrug. This was outside their claimed territory by just a bit, after all, so what would be the problem? Well... unless they found him, of course, but he'd gone plenty of times so far without being found, so it would still probably be fine.

No matter; thinking wasn't exactly his strong suit most of the time anyway, clever though he could occasionally, arguably be.

"So uh... why're ya makin' this your home instead of that ice and ivory Empire place back where ya apparently came from?" he openly asked.

'Ship'? 'Sea gods'? Hm... these folks really were different, it seemed, now weren't they? The only 'Gods' his kin had were the land on the whole, earth and water and all, and the sky, and perhaps a few small ones here and there. Granted, none of it meant all that much to Kai; as good as an outsider, yet he was still counted amongst their number... sort of. He was with them, for now, anyway.

"All alone here, then? Guess that must be pretty tough, though I've never really minded it too much," the fox offered with a little shrug, tilting his head slightly to the side as he considered the question posed. Plenty of things he could say to that, but none went so far in his considerations as the plain and simple truth."As for me, I'm Kai. Just a short and simple name for the runt of the bunch, so they all don't pay much attention to me but I mostly get to do whatever I want 'cause of that," he spoke with a little grin despite any other possible implications. "So I was just checkin' this area out now, especially since my own little home away from everyone else ain't too far off."

"Mm... guess so. Never really thought about it much, I just follow what my nose and ears tell me. They're usually pretty good at catching anything that might be bad," Kai offered with a little shrug. Secrets? He didn't... think so, but thinking about it a little, who was he to say? What was obvious for him might not be so for others, for all he knew. Besides, he'd been raised right in the area; knowing a decent bit about it came right with that, regardless of if he was on the outskirts as the 'runt' or not.

Not that he spent long considering any of it before his mind gave up and moved on to something else, perhaps demonstrated by his eyes wandering the water a little. Then the fish that was swiped up... didn't get all that many of those in the creek he frequented, at least while he frequented it.

"Oh, sure! Don't really usually have this sorta thing; usually just some of the littler animals and some fruits and stuff. Usually works pretty well, but always good to have somethin' different, huh?" he spoke with a little grin, calmly taking the offered fish and wasting little time in munching down on it, even the bones quite no match for the fox man's sharp teeth. "Should be some around here somewhere, actually, if ya want some of that," he thoughtfully added, glancing a little around the forested area and sniffing around slightly before quite suddenly bolting off. Per his general norm when he was only retrieving something, he didn't take long before coming back with a few miscellaneous little fruits. It wasn't much, but it was still something. "Here ya go! Made sure to avoid some of the bad stuff; all this stuff's perfectly good," he assured, offering out said 'perfectly good' fruits.

"Er... what's 'luck' supposed to be?" Kai curiously asked, tilting his head a little to the side.

Well it wasn't his fault that his kin lacked a number of concepts that might otherwise be common... and he himself probably lacked a few more to boot merely with his behavior alone. Still, though, if nothing else he was a good observer (when his attention could be bothered to remain on something); learning was something he did. If he could learn a few things from this, why not ask away?

Such was how his (albeit limited) mental process tended to go.

Even if it didn't always work out so well.

"Go ahead then, plenty of the stuff around that ya should be able to find whenever ya need it. Not sure there's really much of a place around, at least that I've been, that doesn't have some food like this somewhere nearby," he offered, in turn handing over the gathered fruits... only after picking out a pesky little piece of bone or two, mind. Sharp teeth still didn't mean such a thing wouldn't happen, after all; only that it would be well ground by the time it went down. Lessons he'd learned the hard way, but he didn't exactly have to say that. Speaking of... he had to at least try. It had apparently been easy enough for Kabukk, but the creature was a decent bit larger, and no doubt practiced at it. For the 'runt' of the local Creai, well...

...he scared off the fish completely missing his first swipe thanks to not accounting for the water suddenly slowing it so much. There was that.

Grumbling slightly to himself and not patient enough at the moment to wait for the fish to gather back very far, he tried a second swipe only to not get much further. He could swear one of his claw tips brushed the fish, but that didn't exactly do him any good.

"There some sorta... trick to this...?"
