Name: Jasten Beckett Macala
Age: Twenty Three
Race: Human
Origin: When the Titan Project was conceived, one of the first things that the heads of the project worked on was acquiring the necessary crew needed for fulfilling each individual function onboard the starships. Science teams were assigned to positions across the globe, working alongside government organizations in order to find the children they needed. Deciding to prioritize finding exceptional candidates for leadership, the project leads began searching for their little dictators. It was a difficult job for the science teams. Tasked with finding perfect matches that fulfilled all genetic requirements and a high potential for leadership capabilities, they scoured the planet, going from person to person, looking for twelve just right candidates.
It was in the son of William and Samantha Macala that they found their match.
Performing the mandatory tests on all newborn children for their potential for recruitment into the program, the medical staff at the hospital Jasten was born in were shocked to discover that he possessed a near-perfect set of genetic traits for the program, leading them to notify the Titan Project's heads. It didn't take long for a team of scientists from the Project to arrive and begin their own assessments, which ended in confirmation of his compatibility with the program. Jasten was exactly what they were looking for. All they needed now was to observe the subject and ensure that he developed on course. While many in the team voiced the opinion that they should immediately induct Jasten into the program, beginning the programing and indoctrination ahead of time, the team leads shot this plan down, instead insisting that they watch the boy in his first years of life. As he was a potential candidate for a colony leadership position, they needed to know exactly how he'd interact with others. It would only be a few years, they said, and then, they could make their decision.
For five years, the Project team observed Jasten from infancy to kindergarten, practically tracing his every move. The observations gathered on their subject's development noted that compared to other children in his age group, Jasten developed mentally at a quicker pace, something which they took to be a good sign. As he became older and began interacting with others, it quickly became apparent that he was quite the people person, even in an age group which had a tendency to accept others quickly. In order to stimulate reactions that would otherwise not occur, the team covertly introduced conflict where necessary, pulling strings to get the child into situations involving fear and anger. To their delight, while noticing he felt fear and anger, the young child proved to have immense self control for his age... something which essentially confirmed their belief that he was the proper fit for the program.
Mere months after joining kindergarten, the team made their move. Making their presence known to Jasten's mother and father, they explained that they were going to be taking their child for their project, regardless of their personal feelings on the matter. Both Jasten's mother and father were infuriated, but they allowed the scientists to take their child from them. What choice did they have in the matter? With the authority of the team, and the support of the government, they had absolutely no possible way to keep him. And, thought they hated to admit it, even if there had been something they could have done... they wouldn't have. What the Project leads told them had made too much sense. He'd be living a better life off Earth than if he stayed.
Frightened and confused, the young Jasten was taken from his family, and thrust into the Project. Told by the team that he was going to be one of the saviors of the human race, and that one day, he would thank them for this opportunity, the dumbstruck child simply went along with them. He had no idea what was happening, but knew enough to know that whatever it was, he was going to be taking part of it, regardless of his feelings. So when he was told he was going to be going to sleep for awhile, after weeks of enduring prodding questions and sharp needles from doctors, Jasten had only nodded, and accepted his fate.
Upon getting put under and placed in the Hyperion's cryotubes, Jasten's programming began. The computer began rewiring his brain to better suit his future as the Captain of the vessel, conditioning his mind to know how to accomplish that which needed to be done. In addition, the computer took the time to eliminate as much of the child's memory of his parents and the early process of the Project as it could, so as to better ensure the loyalty of the subject. That which it could not remove, it simply modified, in the intent of making sure that upon awakening, Jasten's only childhood memories would be exceptionally hazy... and filled with loyalty to the Project.
Personality: Jasten tends to be as friendly as possible to those around him. Because his job requires for him to not only interact with the crew on all levels, but also to dictate how the colony works, being friendly tends to make his job easier. After all, its easier to inspire comradeship in those who both like and respect you. He is usually polite, however, when dealing with problems within the crew, he is rather blunt. He won't sugar coat it if he's telling you to put your shit together. If there is one thing he cannot stand, its his comrades not working together. He's not unreasonable, of course. He knows arguments happen, and not everyone is going to get along. He doesn't expect them all to be friends, but he does expect them to work professionally.
Off-duty, the Captain is cheerful, open, and just all around fun to be around. Admittedly, most of this is a cover, projected by him in an attempt to keep to the mandate of the mission. He knows full well that a good portion of the crew is frightened by their situation, and only handing on by the smallest of threads. Showing a face of determination and hope is something which he knows will help his crew over come their fear and begin seeking to take charge of their lives and get moving. So, he tries to keep his crew happy and motivated by appearing as such.. even if he himself is terrified that the colony is doomed to die, broken and alone, on this god-forsaken rock.
As part of his programming, Jasten was indoctrinated with basic knowledge of the majority of the important functions onboard the vessel, and as such, is capable of stepping into most roles as needed. Though not a dedicated member of the combat personnel, he technically holds command over the military commander, and as such is versed in basic military tactics and is a capable combatant. Though not a trained medical professional, he is capable of performing first aid and stabilizing injured individuals long enough to turn them over to more skilled individuals. And though not technically a member of the Maintenance team, he is capable of jury rigging what he needs to hold him off long enough to acquire a more reliable fix. He is, in all regards, a true jack of all trades, good at everything, and a master of nothing except for command.
Ethnicity: Caucasian (British Ancestry)
Appearance: Jasten stands at 6'1", and possesses a build much more suited for speed and agility rather than brute strength.

The captain nodded when Katelyn asked him to call her Kaylee. Fair enough. It was kind of funny though, seeing as she was asking him to be less formal while she called him by his rank. "Alright then. Kaylee it is." Jasten might not have been a medical expert, but he was totally sure Kaylee would be okay now that she was talking coherently. Medical wouldn't be neccessary, at least, not yet. With this in mind, he relaxed a little bit, confident that he wouldn't be performing emergency anythings in the near future.
Again, he nodded, when the girl answered his question. Jasten had no clue what an "O2 Regulator" was, nor how a surge could knock it out, but it sounded lethal, and Kaylee shuddered at its thought. So, Jasten was extremely glad that the emergency systems had activated and kept Kaylee from being affected by it. Well, more affected than she was.
The confused look on her face continued, and the expected question that everyone seemed to ask was spoken. Why were they awake if they were so young? Where were they? What happened? In truth, the captain still wasn't entirely sure what the hell had happened at all. Something had gone wrong, and they were here now. "You're right, we aren't at the planet yet." As he spoke, Jasten noticed that the girl was apparently attempting to stave off the cold. He knew exactly what she felt, having dealt with it himself a few days prior. What clothing they had when they emerged was thin, and minimal; suitable for covering them up long enough for them to get warmed clothes. "Here, lets get you into some warmer clothes, eh? I'll explain while we walk."
Jasten stood up, and held out his hand to help Kaylee get up, before turning to lead the way to the locker rooms. As they walked, he explained what was wrong. "Something went wrong with the ship, a few days ago. We aren't entirely sure what exactly happened, since none of us were out of our pods at the time, and if the ship's logs have any information on it, they aren't sharing. It would seem we somehow managed to get caught in a random planet's gravity well, causing the Colony to crash." Jasten shrugged. "Either way, the ship's computer's automatically disengaged the pods of a large number of the crew when we hit the dirt. Long story short, we're stuck groundside, and we have no bloody clue why."
They approached the door which seperated the cryogenic pods from the locker room, and it slid open with a slight hiss. Stepping forward into the room, Jasten was hit with the massive temperature increase from the previous room. He smiled, and turned back to Kaylee. "Grim as that might seem, we hit a goldmine with this world. Its got a breathable atmosphere, ample resources, and overall, a completely hospitable enviroment. Could have been worse."
